A Colombian approach to design and artisan crafts.
The “Guacamaya” table is a contemporary design by Sergio Vergara for Zientte and Artesanias de Colombia.
Guacamayas is a village in the department of Boyacá, Colombia, who traditionally manufacture handicrafts from straw and fique. Originally, these pieces were used for food gathering and in sacred rituals and ceremonies. Today, the artisans in Guacamayas use the same raw materials to make decorative objects: baskets, dishes, fruit bowls, place mats, etc.
I was inspired by this traditional artisan craft. Its shape is spiraled and it coils on top of a matte black metallic structure to reach its beautiful aesthetic. The challenge was to combine something ethnic with a contemporary design to make it versatile.
